After finding an unusually low fare ($750 round-trip) a couple of days ago, I decided to take an impromptu trip to Thailand. Why Thailand? Statisticians describe mediation as what occurs when one variable explains the relationship between two others, who without this third variable would have a merely specious relationship. One might interpret the relationship between The Flying Tiger and Habit in the same way: one is Asian-themed, the other has few Asian inspirations; one is full of Kitsilano yuppies, the other is Main Street hippies; one is brightly-lit and very modern, the other is like the inside of a Pandora’s box. It started in Victoria, BC. It experienced more false starts and delays of game than the Arizona Cardinals this week. It is a space more evocative of uptown chic than noodle joint. I was skeptical.

Mindful Dining

Dharma Kitchen is a new establishment near the Alma and Broadway intersection, an area that is slowly growing in population and commercial variety. Hopefully the restaurant-going populace of that area can reach enough of a critical mass to support a specialty restaurant such as Dharma. The Kitchen’s slogan is “The Food of Mindfulness”, which is reflected in the fully vegan, Thai-inspired menu. In that same vein, Dharma does not serve any alcohol, or any sumptuous desserts. Personally, the lack of a dessert menu seemed confusing, what is it about dessert that speaks of mindlessness – is it the absence of nutritional value?
