After finding an unusually low fare ($750 round-trip) a couple of days ago, I decided to take an impromptu trip to Thailand. Why Thailand? Well, besides the obvious economic reasons, it seems like a good place to experience a whole lot of different vacations, from bustling metropolises to sleepy beaches, and of course I have always been a sucker for Thai food.

‘Sai –Z’ing up
a Quick Bite

Any visitor to Vancouver will notice that there are Japanese restaurants aplenty here. The city’s Japanese fare range from all-you-can-eat satisfaction to the exquisite Omakase dining experience, yet Japanese food lovers should always welcome a new quality restaurant, especially one such as Sai-Z where the unusual décor and an exciting menu should appeal not least to the fashions of its Kitsilano neighbourhood.

Mr. Sub versus Mr. Sushi
a Showdown

By Jason Chin

The time has come to answer the question that has burned in the souls and minds of Vancouverites for ages: What is better, Mr. Sub or Mr. Sushi? This question, nay, this conundrum has bothered me for nearly three years now, since the day I first wandered across the intersection of Howe and Davie and witnessed this bewildering confluence of prefixes. So many questions raced through my head…Had fate merely waved her ugly wand and placed these two independent yet formidable culinary giants right next to each other? Or were these two restaurants run by some sort of shadow organization (like the Pentavirate), banking on the notion that anyone happening by this intersection would certainly want either a sandwich or sushi?

Simple Rules
a Quick Bite

To be perfectly candid, I don’t have a lot of experience with izakaya (Japanese tapas) dining, but I’m hoping that will be an advantage in reviewing Gyoza King. Izakaya is pretty much unknown in the Washington DC area, and for some reason I never really got into it when I first came to Vancouver. So, it’s with few preconceived notions about izakaya and no allegiances to various izakaya spots that I tackled one that I had heard much about for its popularity and late hours, Gyoza King on Robson.

Statisticians describe mediation as what occurs when one variable explains the relationship between two others, who without this third variable would have a merely specious relationship. One might interpret the relationship between The Flying Tiger and Habit in the same way: one is Asian-themed, the other has few Asian inspirations; one is full of Kitsilano yuppies, the other is Main Street hippies; one is brightly-lit and very modern, the other is like the inside of a Pandora’s box. Long story short, they don’t have a lot in common unless you analyze the situation a certain way. Both menus feature items that are perfect for sharing.

Oh yeah, and they’re both really good, too.

It claims to create meals under the very broad description of “Southeast Asian.” It is located in Kitsilano, home of all of the yoga accessories and puppy paraphernalia one’s heart could desire. It started in Victoria, BC. It experienced more false starts and delays of game than the Arizona Cardinals this week. It is a space more evocative of uptown chic than noodle joint. I was skeptical.

Kadoya Sushi is Alright

I recently celebrated my 25th birthday, and what a day. First the Chairman treated me to New India Buffet, which was a delight, and then Ratbag suggested that we check out his new favorite sushi restaurant, Kadoya, on Davie St. We showed up around 6:30, and had no trouble getting a table, although the restaurant was mostly full. The décor was nothing special, typical sushi restaurant stuff, except that the walls are covered with cards featuring comments from previous customers. Personally I don’t see why anyone would care about what someone else thinks about a restaurant, but maybe some do (that’s a joke—you should care deeply about what other people think, especially if that other people is me).
