I really wanted great Indian food last Sunday and I really wanted my first review to be a positive one. But there are times in life when we can’t have the things we want.

I had a date that night, so to take the focus off of me and my many faults, I suggested we review a restaurant and focus on their faults. It turned out that the restaurant I wanted to review, Jolly’s Indian Bistro on W. Broadway, is closed on Sundays, so my date and I decided to check out Annapurna, on 4th, near Burrard, which serves vegetarian Indian cuisine. Luckily, my date was a vegetarian. She’s probably iron-deficient, but an attractive, knowledgeable expert on vegetables.

Hot Food, Bright Lights

Pam’s recent visit to Vancouver provided me with a great chance to try a few new restaurants, and the great weather allowed us to range freely in the downtown area. Although we didn’t stray far for our first couple reviews (Café Burrard St. Deli and Pam’s recapitulation of the disaster that is Vera’s [coming soon]), we decided that rather than go to India Bistro again (though we like it), we would head over to Robson and look for an Indian restaurant there. After walking the Robson blocks we decided on Indian Flavors, which is found on the second floor toward the West end of the shopping area. Although the neon lights were a little troubling, the menu looked good.

Share and Share Alike

Statisticians describe mediation as what occurs when one variable explains the relationship between two others, who without this third variable would have a merely specious relationship. One might interpret the relationship between The Flying Tiger and Habit in the same way: one is Asian-themed, the other has few Asian inspirations; one is full of Kitsilano yuppies, the other is Main Street hippies; one is brightly-lit and very modern, the other is like the inside of a Pandora’s box. Long story short, they don’t have a lot in common unless you analyze the situation a certain way. Both menus feature items that are perfect for sharing.

Oh yeah, and they’re both really good, too.

Cognac is a place, and this ain’t it

I went for dinner with Jocelyn a while back on, I believe, a Monday night. We were in the mood for Indian food, and India Gate was the closest, located just east of Granville on Robson and convenient to central downtown. Showing uncharacteristic foresight, I actually looked at the menu before going in. The prices seemed a little steep considering how the place looked from the outside, but I was starving, and let’s face it, Jocelyn knew she wouldn’t be paying, so we decided to go for it.
