Blogging Cornucopia: Battle of the Sexes!

Next up on my docket was Battle of the Sexes, in which a group of female wine experts takes on a group of males to answer the age old question: what gender is best at blind identification of wine. I know I’ve always wondered.
This is supposed to be a highly entertaining seminar/competition, so it was one that I was quite looking forward to attending.

The female group included several powerhouses: Michelle Bouffard, DJ Kearney, Sandra Oldfield and Daenna van Mulligen. In a surprise move, David Scholefield, former BCLB wine guru, showed up in drag as some kind of Julia Child like character. It was unexpected and pretty hilarious.

In the tradition of the great Tony Pierce and his pioneering photo essay medium, I’ve decided to present my Cornucopia blog as a photo blog.

I arrived at Whistler Friday evening with barely enough time to grab a quick bite to eat, pick up my media pass and hit the hay. Saturday was going to be an early morning.

Whistler Cornucopia 2007
October 25th, 2007 · No Comments
Whistler Cornucopia is happening again this year from November 8th to 12th. From what I can tell, it’s a celebration of food and wine for those fortunate enough to afford a weekend in Whistler plus admittance to several lunches, seminars and parties, which range from $15 to $200. So, it’s a luxury, but quite a fun, interesting, wine-filled one. I was lucky enough to check it out last year and thanks to the good people at Whistler Cornucopia, I’ll be covering it for Eat Vancouver this year.
So, if you are planning to go to Cornucopia this year, please send me an e-mail and perhaps we can meet up for a drink or seminar or something. My email address is in the contact section. As of now, I’m planning to attend the following events:

Since technological issues prevented this from being posted earlier and in on a different forum, I thought I’d post my abbreviated Whistler Cornucopia journal here for anyone interested.
Cornucopia Varietal Series Tastings (Saturday 9:40 AM – 12:00 PM)
The varietal tasting series is a new event at Cornucopia, showcasing three varieties in three 40 minute sessions. Seeing as these sessions are hosted by some of the biggest names in BC’s wine scene, I definitely wanted to make it to all of them. Unfortunately, they began at 9:40 in the morning on a Saturday, so I decided to skip the early session, thus eliminating one of the options. In the end I decided to attend the Pinot Noir and Riesling tastings and forgo the Shiraz session.

Just a quick reminder, as if you needed one, that the Cornucopia celebration at Whistler is coming up (Nov 9th - 12th). There are always a lot of great wine tasting and seminars, as well as opportunities to try local cuisine in some beautiful spots. I’ve never been to any of the extravagant […]

Beyond Restaurant + Lounge Opening Gala
By Jason Chin

Beyond Restaurant and Lounge in the Century-Plaza Hotel officially celebrated its opening this past Tuesday in great style. The media, as well as many other prominent Vancouverites were invited to this gala event marking the restaurant’s opening, which officially occurred over a month ago. It was indeed a lavish and largely enjoyable evening, perhaps the perfect move for a restaurant that was recently praised by the Globe and Mail for its edibles, but not for its tourist-heavy clientele. I have to believe that, at least in the short-run, the event has branded Beyond as a hot-spot in the minds of many Vancouverites.
