A Tale of Three Burgers

** (of four stars)

After reading the rather interesting burger brawl on this site, I was eager for my first experience at Vera’s. I got the cheeseburger with “the works” (the usual sauce condiments, plus tomato, lettuce and onions–all at no extra charge) at the Davie location. I’ll skip the comments on the decor, since Dan and Jason have both given their opinions. The Davie store was clean, and the service was friendly enough. The kaiser bun was good and fresh, as were the veggies. I didn’t ask for my burger to be cooked medium-rare or medium, opting instead to receive what I would assume is the “typical doneness” of a Vera’s burger. The patty was cooked all the way through, and rather dry. There wasn’t too much bread for the patty, and the burger held together well as I was eating. All in all, I thought the burger was OK. It wasn’t bad. I’m not complaining. I’m sure the taste would be improved if the patty was cooked to a juicy medium-rare or medium, though I’ve read Gerald’s comments and realize that half his clientele don’t want to see pink in their burger.

hamburgerThough I expected a little more for a place that’s commonly voted “Best Hamburger” in various Reader’s Choice polls, I’m willing to give Vera’s another go sometime in the future and ask for my patty to spend a shorter time on the grill. But based on that one experience, I would have to say the Feenie burger is a better bet at only a few dollars more.

that burger looks kinda flat… but ive been goin vera’s in ubc to watch the cannucks game. Man its intense in there during a game. Everyone on edge waitin for cannucks to score and we had the best deal. Spending 10 dollars for a meal and being about to stay in for the game even after the 5th OT wiht dallas. The works there are really nice and canucks fan to. Burger was great or maybe canucks won that night, but still taste good when they lost. A mad house in there when its 1 min left and we are one goal short from ot.

    ITS INTENSE

I’m sorry to say that I last went to the Vera’s on Cornwall in Kits when it was in the former Taco Shack spot (which is now something else). Maybe I was wrong to order a non-burger in a burger joint, but a cold bun with MOULD on it on a sausage turned me off from this chainlet for good. Waiting (a bit desperately) for Moderne Burger to reopen in its new expanded digs on Broadway.

Captivated by the beef aroma, I stepped into Vera’s (Marpole location) last week and enjoyed a delicious, juicy, clean-tasting burger. After having raved about it to friends, we returned, hoping to write a positive review to replace this one. However, the reactions were more consistent with the current review. This time the burgers were a bit dry, the service was ridiculously slow due to the inefficient/understaffed kitchen. One of my friends was highly disturbed by the dirty apron we could see cast aside on the kitchen floor. The tables were filthy, the garbage full, and the lack of adequate ventilation on a hot summer evening contributed to the negative experience. I refuse to give up! I sense potential in this disappointing burger shack and will return a third time!
