Tastes of Hunan Heat
A Quick Bite
By Desmond Cheung
Eat Vancouver writer
I hadn’t been fired up by any Hunan heat in Vancouver since the closing of Hu Nan Chinese Restaurant (see Eat Vancouver review ‘South of the Lake, North of the River’) over a year ago. So when our ever-attentive editor told me that some fellow foodies had recommended the Xiang near Metrotown, we didn’t hesitate to gather a group of friends to try it out. I’d never been to Burnaby either, so this seemed as good a reason as any to head that way.

After finding an unusually low fare ($750 round-trip) a couple of days ago, I decided to take an impromptu trip to Thailand. Why Thailand? Well, besides the obvious economic reasons, it seems like a good place to experience a whole lot of different vacations, from bustling metropolises to sleepy beaches, and of course I have always been a sucker for Thai food.

The San Francisco Burrito
May 5th, 2008 · 11 Comments
I currently find myself very amused by this wikipedia page for the “San Francisco Burrito,” and such gems as:
Starting in the mid- to late-1990s, the Mission District faced increasing rents and property values and an influx of higher-income residents and visitors, particularly during the dot-com boom. During this time, some elements of the San Francisco burrito experience became politicized. One activist disdained the practice of charging extra for chips and salsa, for instance, as an anti-Mexican symptom of gentrification. Some taquerias also offer additional types of flour tortillas (for instance, whole wheat or spinach), but this same activist declared, ‘I will shoot my son and daughter if they ever order a green burrito.’
This long standing burrito tradition really makes me wish that the Vancouver Burrito wasn’t a fusion of the San Fran one and Lebanese elements. And the fact that ours is really bad.
Phodown, a second opinion
May 2nd, 2008 · 7 Comments

A little while ago Eat Vancouver reader and local food enthusiast, Knightafter, emailed me with the results of a phodown he has been conducting over the past several months. I was incredibly impressed by the thoroughness of his report, as well the sheer number of pho joints he has visited. It is also nice to see that his results correlate very highly with our own, and they highlight some potential areas for reassessment. And of course, he uncovered a lot of interesting places that we just didn’t know about. It’s highly worth a look (click the image above) for any pho-lover in the area.
