Hot Food, Bright Lights
a Quick Bite
By Daniel Fishman

Pam’s recent visit to Vancouver provided me with a great chance to try a few new restaurants, and the great weather allowed us to range freely in the downtown area. Although we didn’t stray far for our first couple reviews (Café Burrard St. Deli and Pam’s recapitulation of the disaster that is Vera’s [coming soon]), we decided that rather than go to India Bistro again (though we like it), we would head over to Robson and look for an Indian restaurant there. After walking the Robson blocks we decided on Indian Flavors, which is found on the second floor toward the West end of the shopping area. Although the neon lights were a little troubling, the menu looked good.

The Phodown Recap

After a dozen phos, the phodown is finally over and I have to admit, it’s been a turbulent ride. My sodium intake has been all over the charts, some nights waking me up, dry-mouthed in the middle of the night, absolutely certain that the pho-gods were hiding just around the corner. I’ve had bowls of pho envelop me with their fragrant bouquets, just daring me slurp up my fill, and I’ve had bowls of pho whisper to me, almost inaudibly, words of warning: “You are going to regret this later.” And I did. This is not to mention the Fishman sending me painstaking looks that sent a message as clear day, “When will this be over?” I haven’t seen such pure, unbridled dread in his someone’s eyes since someone mentioned the word “salad” to Gerald Tritt.

Cheap Breakfast on Burrard
a Quick Bite
By Daniel Fishman

When I moved from the Granville Island area to the West End, I figured two things: 1) it would give me the chance to write a lot more reviews for EatVancouver, given the abundance of restaurants in the area, and 2) I would be unlikely to find a breakfast deal to replace Yummy Sushi. On the first count, I was clearly right, as I have doubled my rate of production from one review every 3 months, to two, but it turns out I may have been wrong on the 2nd point.

This is a quick note to say that the phodown recap is coming along nicely. I’ve spent the last two weeks cooped up in a small hotel room in Missoula with a typewriter and case a of Tab, pacing, screaming and breaking mirrors. So I’m happy to say the recap is coming along nicely, and it will be published Sunday night, or Monday morning if you’re more inclined to look at it that way.

Have you ever been hanging out with your buddies, watching the game, and suddenly realize that you are all sitting with basically the same posture? Or have you perhaps caught yourself fighting the urge to scratch your nose just after watching a friend do the same? Don’t worry, there’s nothing unusual about it – actually it’s a phenomenon psychologists have been documenting for years. And believe it or not, this research has recently been used to explain why some servers get bigger tips than others.

Hot Torta Subs
a Quick Bite
By Daniel Fishman
Eat Vancouver writer
I can’t count the number of times I have passed by a sign advertising “Hot Torta Subs” and been violently intrigued, but it is definitely more than three. After the Chairman and I discovered that Au Petit Café has selected Wednesday as their random day to be closed, thus disqualifying themselves from the Great Pho-down, it seemed like the best way to salvage our trip to Main St. was to check out this mysterious Torta at Duffin’s Donuts.

Bean There, Done That
a Quick Bite
By Daniel Fishman and Jason Chin
Eat Vancouver writers
After a busy morning of exercising our commercial acting chops, the Chairman and I were ready for a nice big lunch, since nothing works up an appetite like pretending to use nasal spray. We had both passed by the Mouse & Bean a lot of times, and since we were in the area, decided to check it out.

Well, judging by the small number of comments and e-mail in response to this little prank, I’m guessing few were fooled. I’ll have to work extra hard to fool Eat Vancouver’s savvy readers next year. And thanks to the folks at DonRockwell.com, from whom I borrowed this prank.
