Quickbite: Chianti’s

Seeing as Chianti’s is only a short jaunt from my apartment, it is somewhat surprising that it took me this long to give it a try. Add in the fact that I’m a huge pasta nut - I was in New York a few weeks ago where I enjoyed some superb pasta in that city’s little Italy - and you’d think I’d be all over this restaurant. Well, it turns out that I should have postponed this visit indefinitely, because if my first and only visit is indicative of the food and service at this place, Chianti’s sucks.

It’s a common sentiment among lovers of Mexican food that Vancouver is plagued by a dearth of said cuisine. You can count the number of authentic Mexican joints on one hand, and the number of good ones on a few fingers. Unfortunately, places like Tacos Mexico Rico and La Casita, serviceable options for somewhat authentic Mexican, are losing the battle against uninspired Taco Bell rip-offs (names such as The Red Burrito and the horrid Casa de Amigos come to mind) and soulless food factories like Las Margaritas and Andale’s.

** (of four stars)
I recently celebrated my 25th birthday, and what a day. First the Chairman treated me to New India Buffet, which was a delight, and then Ratbag suggested that we check out his new favorite sushi restaurant, Kadoya, on Davie St. We showed up around 6:30, and had no trouble getting a table, although the restaurant was mostly full. The décor was nothing special, typical sushi restaurant stuff, except that the walls are covered with cards featuring comments from previous customers. Personally I don’t see why anyone would care about what someone else thinks about a restaurant, but maybe some do (that’s a joke—you should care deeply about what other people think, especially if that other people is me).
